ABOUT THOSE SMART AND TRAINABLE BEAGLES!!

Many people live with the idea that Beagles are hard to train, hard headed and difficult.  This is NOT SO.  Bad breeders, bad owners and those that just find it easier to tell people they are difficult to train so that they don't have to worry about breeding for trainability go on with the facade.  The fact is, in the 30 some years I've been involved with this wonderful breed as well as an all breed trainer, I believe every year even more strongly that Beagles are one of the most trainable, intelligent and quick to retain learning more than any other breed I have handled.  Yes I mean EVERY other breed.   Just look into that deep dark eye of a Beagle and you will understand this is an animal with much intelligence and awareness.

It may be true that I do favor this breed the most, therefore I am blinded by Beagle love.  But, I still know ease of training when I experience it.  Yes, hunting dogs and families that bring Beagles home from back yard breeders and hunters may find difficulty in training their dog.  This has more to do with where they purchased their dog from than the fact that it is a Beagle.  You also must show a Beagle that YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING!...or the equal of that in doggie behavior.  This does not mean to prove your alpha but more that you know what is going on in the Beagles bright, quick mind.  They can get bored so they do best with positive reinforcement and this is usually food.   I will go more into this later as this page is one that just occurred to me to create.  For now I'll list a few of the movies or television shows Beagles have been on in the last few years.. and still are.  I challenge you to find any breed of dog that has had so many different shows and movies aired in such a short amount of time with one breed in it as the star or guest star.    I also want to mention those who have or are thinking about rescuing a Beagle. ALL Beagles are trainable.  You may run into difficulty with a rescue dog, but with proper guidance you can reprogram any dog with the wrong habits.  All behavior deemed undesirable by dog owners is a behavior caused in one way or another by the human owner missunderstanding the dog or just not caring enough to properly train the dog.  Any owner that has rescued a Beagle is welcome to contact me for FREE training help and guidance.  I would be more than happy to give you advise at no charge.  You help a Beagle, I will be happy to help YOU.

My first example will be my own Grace's accomplishment not only with her obedience titles but with the TELEVISION SERIES she starred in for Channel 45/49 of Akron/Canton called "SECRETS OF SHERLOCK"  Ohio when she was 3yrs old!  Her son Snapper guest starred in one show with her and her sons and grandsons with me now are as trainable as she was.  Grace also shot a commercial for the cell phone company "Wilcom Cellular".  Grace NEVER needed a second take for anything she did!  The human actors did!

Next will be the movie CATS AND DOGS 2001  (Don't forget I was contacted about a Beagle for this role while they were getting their Beagle team of 5 ready to start shooting this movie.)

Then there was the second CATS AND DOGS movie.

Lest we never forget the original movie "SHILOH" 2000

The second movie about Shiloh ...... "SHILOH:  SAVING SHILOH" 2006

There is the Sci Fi series Star Trek Enterprise that runs currently.  The Beagle named Prada along with Windy and Breezy  (a team of three Beagles, Prada being the main actor) play the role of Capt. Jonathan Archer's Beagle named Porthos.  Scott Bakula plays the role of the Captain Jonathan Archer, the first captain of the Enterprise.

"THE YEAR OF THE DOG " 2007 Now, I have not seen this movie, but Molly Shannon stars in the movie.  It beging with her and her dog "Pencil" a Beagle.  The movie goes on to tell the story of how she deals with  the loss of her beloved dog.  Now, being that the Beagle is the center of the story, I am guessing the Beagle appears in at least SOME of the movie! I plan on viewing the movie very soon.

I watched a disney show on cable tv the other day about young wizards in today's world.  A Beagle dog they found that was also magical was the main storyline for this episode.

Of course we all know about the movie UNDERDOG!  2007 Yes Underdog is a BEAGLE!!

Let us not forget the movie Harrison Ford and Annette Bening starred in the year of  1991 "REGARDING HENRY"  A Beagle played the part of the star's daughter's pet in the movie.  This movie brought the Beagle to many families attention as a nice, small and happy pet for a family.

I will also go on to remind all of you that Beagle appear in countless television shows and commercials!  I'll have a more updated and true list later on.  This should give you some idea of how Beagles have out performed other pure breds in the last few years in popularity of television and movies!  Take that Wishbone!
